A quantity of real German Wool isbrought into Great Britain in a raw state, and is combed*spun, and dyed, chiefly in Scotland, but that dyed here isless perfect and durable than that imported ready for use,excepting those dyed black, which are cleaner in English-grown embroidery lambswool, though harsher,is in some respects superior, the scarlet dye quite equalling,if not surpassing, the German; as also several shades ofall the other colours and neutral tints. It is best suitedfor use on coarse canvas. Berlin or German Wool is thefinest of all descriptions, and is produced from the fleeceof the Merino breed of Saxony sheep, and of neighbouring. Fia. 36. It was so called after thecottons formerly imported from Bengal, the name referringonly to the pattern, but is also to be had in a mixture oflinen and cotton. It resembles the French Percale andMillerayes (which see), but is softer, and is made ofEnglish cotton, or cotton and wool. The cotton stripemeasures 34in. inches in width, and linen stripe about 24inches. It was first manufactured in this country atPaisley.
