In plan the mosque closely follows that of theBasilica, the chancel becoming reduced in size, andtaking the form of the mihrab or niche in theeastern wall, but in other respects, at least in theearlier periods of the style, remaining much thesame. The first real development was the substitution, forstructural reasons, of the pointed arch in place of thesemicircular one which characterises Byzantine andRoman alike ; an
