In thisresignation the titles of marquis and earl of Queensberry, vis-count of Drumlanrig, Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibberis,were not included. On 9th February 1709, his grace wasappointed third secretary of state. He died, after a shortillness, 6th July 1711, in his 49th year. His portrait issubjoined:. By his duchess, Mary, fourth daughter of Boyle,Lord Clifford, he had four sons and three daughters. Thetwo elder sons died young, and the third, Charles, succeededhim. His second daughter, Lady Jean Douglas, married 5thApril 1720, Francis, earl of Dalkeith, afterwards duke ofBuccleuch, with issue. Charles, third duke of Queensberry and second duke ofDover, the third but eldest surviving son, born at Edin-burgh, 24th November 1698, was created earl of Solway,viscount of Tibberis, and Lord Douglas of Lockerbie, Dal-veen, and Thornhill, by patent, dated at Windsor castle 17thJune 1706 (the same date as that of the new patent of thedukedom of Queensberry granted to his father), to him and the heirs male of his body.
