At a, isthe cupboard with three shelves. Thiscupboard, with the dishes it will con-tain, is balanced by the weight c, atthe end of a rope, passing over thepulleys b, which are attached to thetop of the cupboard. This, with aslight impetus, sends the loaded cup-board up to the top; it is drawn down by a small wheel and crank, d, with a similar cord or leathern5. This wheel andcrank are fixed firmly at the bottom of the trunk in which thecupboard moves, and about a foot and a half above the floorof the kitchen. The top of the trunk, or that part above thefloor,/, is disguised, and rendered ornamental, by the neat side-board or closet covering it, which opens in front to allow thedishes to be taken out. Estimate. If this cottage is built of brick and stucco, withcut stone labels to the windows, and finished in a consistentand appropriate, though simple manner in the interior, it willcost about $3500. Built of quarried stone, where the latteris not abundant, it would probably cost 83800. THE GROUNDS OF DESIGN III.
