Either motor alone will propelthe locomotive at double this speed, but under the State lawboats cannot be towed at the higher speeds. Each locomotivecontains three 25-kw self-cooling oil transformers, which re-duce the trolley voltage from 1170 volts or 390 volts to 200 voltsfor the motors. The motor changing switch, similar in patternto an ordinary railway controller, serves to connect the twomotors in tandem, or connect either one to the line and cut outthe other or both. When connected in tandem the stator of thefirst motor is connected to the secondary circuit of the locomo-. A controller, similar in form to thechanging switch, serves to vary the resistance of the rheostatin circuit and to operate the reversing switches, so that themovement of the controller handle in one direction operates thelocomotive ahead and in the other direction reverses it at themiddle position of the handle. At one end of the locomotive isa plug switchboard, by which the primary connections of the locomotive transformers are changed to suit the trolley voltagewhen passing between the high-tension and low-tension sec-tions. To facilitate this change the high-tension and low-tension trolley wires are run side by side for about 100 ft., andall four trolley wires are dead-ended, so the locomotive must bestopped and the trolleys changed from one pair of w
