No. 8 THE CONGO QUESTION. | In considering the Congo Ques-tion as it stands to-day it seems nec-essary to turn back in the history ofthat region to the period when it wasfirst invaded by the white man. As early as 1854 Livingston visit-ed the portion of the Congo drainedby the Kasai River, and in his finaljourney he followed its course toNyaugne, not suspecting at the time,however, that it had any connectionwith the Congo, but believing itformed the upper part of the Nile. A little later came Stanley explor-ing the country in two different ex-peditions. During the interveninginterval, interest in the Dark Con-tinent had been rapidly increasingan Europe, but in Belgium alone didjit culminate in action.
