Locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . e en-gines in use in this country, the questionof setting them properly and easily isquite an important one, as numerous in-quiries on the subject have indicated. Itis easy to tell a man that the action is thesaine as in a plain slide valve (except, ofcourse, where the piston valve has internaladmission, when the motion is exactly re-versed) ; but a few points from men whoare familiar with piston-valve practice isof more value. Knowing that Mr. George R. Hender- moved when necessary to examine or re-set the valves. The valves under thesecircumstances can be examined at anytime, not only for the proper lead and cut-off, but to see if the rings are broken. Theprocess is about as follows for valves withcentral admission: The valve can be fitted up and put com-plete in the cylinder with the head andcasing applied without taking any pre-liminary measurements, providing, ofcourse, the valve and bushings have beenfinished to the drawing. When ready toset the valve, remove all the plugs above. MOUNT WATKINS, YOSEMITE , ALONG THE SUNSET ROUTE. son, of the Chicago & Northwestern road, has given considerable attention to thepiston valve—as evidenced by his patentrelief valve, mentioned elsewhere—wewere glad to secure his method as de-f cribed below. Mr. Henderson says: In my practice with piston valves, Ihave always used a peep-hole, about I4inches diameter, so located that you couldlook directly down into the cylinder portand see the cutting-off edge of the port, and consequently the valve as it passes hole is covered with a brass plugduring use of the engine, and is only re- referred to and insert in one of them alighted taper or a thin torch tube. Thiswill illuminate the opening in the bushingforming the edge of the port, and by mov-ing the valve until the internal edge ofthe packing rings comes against the cut-off edge of the port, the exact position ofthe valve for
