THE TREATMENT OF SCALP RINGWORM. 471 spirit and ether, and from the use of gas water (Aldersmith).Such happ3 effects, however, cannot be rehed on. Then thesimple plan suggests itself of carefully pulling out (epilating)all the diseased hairs, which is satisfactory with the less fragilehair of favus infection. Various plans have been in vogue, fromthe barbarous old wholesale method by the calotte to themodern detailed plan by forceps. In most cases and moststages of ringworm, however, the extreme fragility of thediseased hair makes this treatment futile, for the hairs breakand grow up again as diseased as before. Nevertheless, I wishto insist here that epilation sometimes proves an invaluableaid to cure. When the hairs become loosened in the courseof treatment they can sometimes be readily and painlesslyextracted entire, often with the root-sheath adhering. Ialways try this proceeding from time to time. It
