WW1 Gallipoli campaign memorial, showing John Simpson Kirkpatrick with his donkey, on Littlehaven Promenade in South Shields, England, UK

John Simpson was born in South Shields and acted as a stretcher bearer serving with the Australian army in Gallipoli. He was used to working with donkeys and, for three weeks, without regard for his own safety, led injured men away from the battlefield carrying them on a donkey. He was killed by machine gun fire.
