The naval jack bears the same number of stars as the national colors. This flag has 38 stars which would date it from 1877 to 1890 when the 38 star flag was official. However, the history associated with this flag is that it was purchased by the Ex-Man-O-Wars' men (a naval veteran's group) of St. Louis for recruiting purposes for World War I and was used at funerals of naval men.
