Some of the 4000 ancient Buddhist temples which are scattered across the Plain of Bagan, (or Pagan) in Burma, ( or Myanmar).
The 'Bagan Archeological Zone' covers about 26 square miles in central Burma. Its richest period was in the eleventh and twelfth centuries when the landowners raised some 4000 Buddhist temples to give thanks for their affluence. The temples vary from chapel size to cathederal size. Many have now been restored and their spires are the outstanding spectacle in the landscape.
