VLT Survey Telescope construction. Astronomical engineers discussing the construction of the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). The structure they are sitting on and in is the top ring, the structure that supports the secondary mirror of a reflecting telescope. It is a similar size to the main mirror that is metres wide. At right, Professor Dario Mancini (red shirt), of the University of Naples, Italy, is in charge of the design and development of the VST. The VST is a wide-field telescope that will be used to select targets for the VLT (Very Large Telescope). The VST is being constructed by the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC), Naples, Italy. It is scheduled to begin operating at the VLT site in Chile in 2005.
