A Famosa (Malay: Kota A Famosa; "The Famous" in Portuguese) is a Portuguese fortress located in Malacca, Malaysia. It is among the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia. The Porta de Santiago, a small gate house, is the only remaining part of the fortress still standing. St Pauls Hill, Malacca, originally a settlement of seafarers (Orang Laut) The name 'Melaka' was used for the whole peninsula and the straits that separated the peninsula from Sumatra became known as the Straits of Melaka.
