THE MUSCLES OF THE PELVIS IN SAGITTAL SECTION. 73 Tig. 39 shows the muscles of the pelvis in sagittal section with arteries andnerves, after removal of the viscera. The psoas muscle is seen overhangingthe brim of the pelvis and narrowing its superior strait; upon the psoas lie thecommon and external iliac arteries, and it is crossed by the internal iliac obturator muscle covers the obturator foramen, and its fibers converge Deep epigastric Femoral ring Obtur. foramen. The levator ani seen aris-ing from the fibrous line will be described more particularly in connectionwith Figs. 45 to 48. The coccygeus muscle borders the posterior margin of thelevator ani, is fan-shaped, and is attached by its base to the side of the lowersacrum and coccyx, and by its apex to the spine of the ischium. The pyri-formis muscle pads the posterior part of the pelvis, rising in muscular bundlesfrom the front of the sacrum and gradually converging and passing out of thepelvis through the great sacro-sciatic foramen, posterior to the sciatic nerve. 74 TOPOGRAPHICAL ANATOMY.
