I think you had best sell a few casksof the most ordinary ginseng, if you can sugar will save the expense of any stoneballast and it will make a floor for the teas, etc., at Canton. At Batavia you must if possible get asmuch freight for Canton as will pay half ormore of your charges—that is, if it will notdetain you too long—as by this additionof freight it will exceedingly help the voy-age. You must endeavor to be the firstship with ginseng, for be assured you willdo better alone than you will if there arethree or four ships at Canton at the sametime with you. . .. The home of Richard Derby, built about 1750. get one dollar a pound for it. If the priceof sugar be low, you will then take intothe ship as much of the best white kind aswill floor her, and fifty thousand weight ofcoffee, if it is as low as we have heard—part of which you will be able to stow be-tween the beams and the quintlings, andfifteen thousand of saltpeter; if very low, some nut-megs, and fifty thousand weightof pepper. This you will stow in the fore-peak, for fear of its injuring the teas. The Captain Magee and Mr. Perkins are tohave 5 per cent, commission for the salesof the present cargo and 2\ per cent, onthe cargo home, and also 5 per cent, on theprofit made on goods that may be pur-chased at Batavia and sold at Canton, orin any other similar case, that may ariseon the voyage. They are to have one-halfthe passage money—the other half be-longs to the ship. The privilege of Cap-tain Magee is 5 per cent, of what the ship 57° The Outing Magazine carries on cargo, exc
