New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, on 9th March 2004. New Orleans was a city of over million people before Hurricane Katrina hit it on 29th August 2005. Although many people fled the city before the hurricane hit, many thousands remained and many thousands died. Katrina was the third strongest hurricane ever to hit the USA, packing winds of over 230 kilometres per hour. The storm surge and rains led to the breaching of levees that held back river, sea and lake water from the low-lying city. Once ruptured, around 80% of the city was flooded. The total evacuation of New Orleans was ordered on 30th August 2005. For the same area after the storm, see E158/141.
