There has been a spectacular head-oncollision of two 60 ton Baldwin enginesof the passenger type, at the Delmarrace track, at St. Louis. The machineswere said in the press dispatches to have70 in. driving wheels and were let looseunder full steam from opposite ends ofa mile of temporary road. This performance was dignified by the trying to run past a danger signal andhalted by a perfectly workable and sim-ple stop mechanism, capable of doingbusiness in the depth of winter—thatwould be a sight worth seeing. Thenwould be the time to call it a test and tobring along the corps of competent ob-servers and all the rest of it. Marshall P. Wilder at the Grand Canon. h^verybody knows Marshall P. Wilder. His genial presence and funny stories. M. C. U. DROP TESTING M.^CHIXF. AT PVRDVE name of test, and we are told that acorps of competent men were present toascertain by actual observation, andfrom a scientific and experimental stand-point what results would follow sucha collision. Notes of the condition ofthe track were made, etc., etc., etc., etc. All this is pure bosh. It was not a testin any sense of the word, and no newfacts concerning collisions or how toavoid them have been brought to lightby it. A moving picture machine tookphotographs of the afltair for reproduc-tion in the various theaters of our largecities and that is about all the scientificrecord anyone will ever see or hear of. The spectacle of a full sized locomotive make him welcome in every newspaperoffice. On the stage he creates severallaughs a minute. His magazine articleshave been smilingly read by millions.
