Badlands National Park partnered with three schools on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation - American Horse (Allen, SD), Porcupine, and Pine Ridge – to introduce the next generation to field science. Students learned about resource management practices at three national park service sites – Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, and Badlands - during ranger-led curriculum-based programs at their schools. Students then combined scientific observations with artistic techniques to complete journals. The journals document scientific observations and concepts as influenced by Lakota cultural understanding and perspective. To achieve this science-culture connection, Badlands staff worked alongside Lakota educational consultants and teachers. Participating students visited Badlands and/or Wind Cave for "bio-blitz" styled field days as they were available and had transportation. Students used their own personalized journals and iNaturalist app on iPods to document scientific observations in the parks.
