Stirling.^ Onthe death of his brother,the Regent Mar, he was intrusted with the care of theyoung King James vi., and he and his half-brother Adam,Oommendator of Oambuskenneth, granted a bond for thehouse of Mar that the King would be kept securely inStirling Castle under the tuition of George Buchanan andPeter Young.^ In March 1577-78, on the fall of Morton, theKing nominally took the government into his own hands,and Erskine was appointed one of the fifteen members ofthe new council then formed. On 26 April following theyoung Earl of Mar, prompted by Morton, seized the castleof Stirling, ejected his uncle, and obtained possession of theKings per
