Listeria sp. bacteria, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Listeria are Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria. The species L. monocytogenes is a human pathogen, causing the disease listeriosis. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, meningitis and encephalitis (swelling of the brain).
