Its verycalmness, the easeand rapidity with which success was won, rob thebiographer of picturesque opportunities. Pettie,moreover, was an indifferent correspondent, for hehated letter - writing, and he left nothing in theshape of diaries or documents (beyond a rough vii. viii JOHN PETTIE and iiicoiii})lete list of his pictures) available forbiographical purposes. These are probably thereasons why, though fifteen years have passed sincehis death, no monograph on John Pettie yetappeared. These fifteen years, however, have witnesseda growing appreciation of his work, and especiallyof his power and influence as a colourist. It isincreasingly recognised that Pettie with the othermemljers of the Scott Lauder School—with GeorgePaul Chalmers, McTaggart, Orchardson, and therest—counts as one of the forces in nineteenthcentury art, and that his work has the elements ofdramatic power, of brilliant colour, and individualstyle which make for permanent greatness.
