Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . ted thirty-two years service as president, receiver, and then president of the Big Four Ingalls is one of the most popularrailroad nflficial: in the conntrv. and is Six-Wheel Switch Engine for theLal<e Shore. This latest Lake Shore & Railway switch engine has beenturned out of the Pittsburgh works of theAmerican Locomotive Company. The en-gine stands on six coupled wheels and has^I9x26-in. cylinders, 52-in. drivers, and atotal weight of pounds. Theseengines were designed for heavy yardservice and are strongly built with a viewof easily meeting the require-ments of this kind of work, and of re-maining out of the shop the full limit oftime. The maximum effort of whichthese engines are capable, viz., 26,000pounds, shows them to be well to the frontin the matter of power, and the gives a ratio to traction of 5, indi-cates that the machines may be dependedupon to exert the full energy developed,,under anv conditions of SIK-WHEEI, KNCINK —LAKK SllORK .\NU .sijl IHKRN St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha whenhe ran into a washout with the resultthat it ended the career of a very brightand useful man. He was for years acorrespondent of Railway and Loco-motive Engineering, and his letterswere always thoroughly practical andreadable. He was one of the patenteesof the Wallace and Kellogg VariableExhaust Nozzle and of Several otherrailway appliances. He obtained two ap-pointments as road foreman of engines, but each time preferred to return to hsfamiliar work of running a locomotive. We do not recall the name of any manwho has dropped out of railway service oflate years, who left such an aching voidas that which stands open through Mackenzie having resigned the po-sition of Superintendent of MotivePower of the Nickel Plate line which hehas held for about twenty years.
