Shoulder joint re-surfacing instruments. Image 1 of 11. Instruments used in surgery to replace the worn surface of the ball joint in a patient suffering from significant osteoarthritis of the shoulder. Osteoarthritis causes the surface of the joint to wear and become rough. The surgery, known as a hemiarthroplasty, inserts a mushroom-shaped prosthetic metal 'cap' on top of the worn ball, at the top of the arm bone (humerus). This provides a new, smooth surface. A pin on the underside of the cap, inserted into the top of the bone, holds the prosthesis in place. For images of the prosthetic 'cap' see C001/4576 and C001/4578.
