Just in front and just behind the posterior horns or cornuaare seen sections of certain small nerve fibres, which were describedsimultaneously by Lissaucr, of Ijorlin, and Spitzka, of New York, 58 INTRODUCTORY, and which I have therefore named the Spitzka-Lissauer column. Infront of these on the extreme postero-lateral aspect of the cord out-side of the latter pyramidal column is seen the direct cerebellarcolumn. In front of this, reaching around upon the periphery onthe anterior pyramidal column, is seen the column of Gowers, aboutwhich there is still some discussion, but which is probably a sensorycolumn. The fundamental column and the lateral column are veryimperfectly known, and research will probably show that they con-tain bundles of nerve fibres as yet uns
