J. W. PETTIGREW.(See page 307.). Chapter X. Still must I on ; for I am as a weed,Flung from the rock, on oceans foam to sailWhereer the surge may sweep, the tempests breath prevail. After idling a week or so at a sailors boarding-house inJames street, I shipped aboard the ship Oneida, CaptainFunk, one of the Havre line of packet-ships, or liners, asthey were then called, plying between New York andHavre, which latter port we arrived at after a rathertempestuous passage of twenty-two days, nothing of noteoccurring, except that the mate was not sober during thewhole passage. Being cousin to the captain his weaknesswas overlooked. I may also mention casually that eachwatch was allowed half a gallon of fine brandy every dayfor dinner, and in harbor boarded ashore, and lived likelords, all at the ships expense. In a few days we commenced discharging cargo, and itwas astonishing to witness the French dock laborers take abale of cotton, weighing from five hundred to six hundredpounds resting on their hands behind their back
