Professor Charles M. Lieber (born 1959), US chemist and nanotechnologist. Lieber works at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA. He works on the construction of wires only a few atoms wide (nanowires). Such wires could have many uses, as they can be arranged to form transistors, light emitting diodes and electrical circuits. Such circuits are far smaller than conventional silicon chips. The nanowires can also be used in extremely sensitive detectors for chemicals. Lieber and his team have developed a nanowire tester for prostate cancer that is 10 times more sensitive than existing tests. Photographed in 2002.
