Colour postcard view of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ferry 'Lady of Mann' moving swiftly across the Irish Sea, UK, 1939
A Valentine's 'Art Colour' Postcard, posted Douglas, Isle of Man, 14 August 1939. The ' Lady of Mann' (painted white 1930-39) was launched at Barrow-in-Furness in the Centenary Year of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. When launched in March 1930, the ship, the largest operated by the Steam Packet Company, could carry 1170 First Class and 1103 3rd Class passengers at a top speed of 23 knots, initially travelling between Fleetwood and Douglas. The length of the ship was m (372 ft). The Lady of Mann evacuated over 4000 troops at Dunkirk in 1940 and saw action in the Juno Beach Sector of the D-Day Landings in 1944. The ship was returned to the Steam Packet Company in 1946 and broken up in 1971.
