Cholera toxin molecule. Computer model showing the secondary structure of the B subunit complex from a molecule of cholera toxin. Cholera toxin is a protein complex secreted by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, that causes the disease cholera. It is made up of an A subunit and five B subunits that form a ring (shown here) which binds to the intestinal lining. In its most severe forms, cholera is one of the most rapidly fatal illnesses known.
