Fallujah, Iraq. Satellite image of the Iraqi city of Fallujah on 5 November 2004, just days before a massive military assault by US and Iraqi forces to defeat some 2000-3000 rebel fighters in the city. North is at top. The area shown here is about kilometres across. Operation Phantom Fury began on 8 November 2004 as US forces seized the bridges (far left). Six US battalions (over 10,000 troops) entered the city from the north and, with the aid of air support, won a 6-day battle. The city was extensively damaged in the fighting, but 70-90% of the city's 300,000 population had already fled. Image taken by the Quickbird satellite.
