Ninth New York Cavalry—Much of the material forthis notice of the Ninth New York Cavalry was obtainedfrom a history of the regiment by Hon. Newel Cheney. In August and September, 1861, a volunteer cavalryregiment was enlisted in this county and Cattaraugus. Itbegan its organization by the volunteering of men forcavalry service in the Counties of Chautauqua, Catta-raugus and Wyoming in this State, and in the adjoiningtowns of Warren County, Pa. It had progressed so farthat on September 9, 1861, an order was issued for theregiment to go into camp at Westfield. The camp wasthe old Fair
