Coffin ofEng., except that it did not cover the teeth, or open the bite. It was strongly retained by two wire clasps, extending from eitherside to clasp a bicuspid and molar. The plate was separated later-ally, leaving the anterior part sufficiently large to cover the inter-maxillary portion of the process, for the purpose of forcing it forwardwith the teeth. Bands of gold were placed on the incisors with lugson their lingual surface, which firmly retained the anterior part ofthe plate. When the incisors were moved as far forward as practical (asshown by the models), the accompanying appliance (which is illustratedby the photograph Fig. 10) was adjusted. This metal appliance as seen, is made of brass and nickel-platedto cover the chin, and provided with two tubes soldered on the outersurface, perpendicular and corresponding in position with the cornersof the mouth and plated with 10. A crib was made for the lower incisors and bicuspids of Germansilver wire, witli the main wire on the labial surface, and extendingbackward following the line of the gum to surround the bicuspids, with the ends left long to act as springs on the lingual surface of theincisors. The cross bars to connect the sides of the crib extended over thegrinding surface at the junction of the bicuspids on either side. Wire posts were soldered to the main wire and curved in suitableform to allow room for the action of the lower lips and enter the tubesin the chin appliance at the proper angle. Two German silver wires are pivoted to the lower part of the Hahl, Verband fiir Kieferbriiche. 127 chin apparatus with the ends projecting upward, end backwardsufficiently far, and diverging until they are about one and one-halfinches apart. The ends are then bent at sharp angles and unitedwith solder. A metal button is
