French Red Legged Partridge and chicks resting on compost mound
Gamebirds like the pheasant and partridge have been part of the English countryside since the middle ages. Although essentially a WILD species they are managed to an extent by gamekeepers and large country estate owners to ensure a continued population of birds to satisfy the annual hunting Lincolnshire which is primarily arable farmland the truly English or Grey Partridge became scarce for a number of reasons which involved modern agricultural methods like over use of available land pesticides diminishing of ground cover and habitat it is pleasing to note that since a lot of re-thinking has gone on regarding farming in the County this trend has been reversed and the Grey Partridge along with many other ground nesting birds are making a healthy comeback. This image shows a red-legged or French Partridge which has a strong presence in Lincolnshire
