Rome's noon gun cannon being fired on Janiculum (aka Gianicolo Hill).

Rome's noon gun cannon being fired on Janiculum (aka Gianicolo Hill). The firing of the noon gun is a tradition begun on the 1st December 1847 (at Pope Pius IX's suggestion) in order to precisely synchronise the chiming of all Rome's church bells. The cannon fell silent from 1939 until it was re-introduced on 21st April 1959, the 2712th anniversary of the founding of the city of Rome. The gun presently used is a Howitzer 105/22 (model 14/61) affectionately nicknamed "The Monster". It is operated by Italian military personnel.
