Net-winged midge (Liponeura sp.) larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the larva of a net-winged midge, showing its antennae (top), mouthparts (centre) and legs. Midge larvae are aquatic, only leaving the water to hatch into adults. Net-winged midges (family Blephariceridae) are found near fast-flowing streams where the larvae live. Also shown here are the suction cups (dark, round) that the larva uses to fasten itself to rocks and other solid objects to avoid being swept away by the current.
