Mythical places, the Repúblicas are students’ halls of residence that date back to the 14th century, a time when the city experienced a significant growth in its student population. Synonymous with irreverence, these halls of residence are genuine communities and a fine example of democracy that is due to their internal organisation. The division of work is traditionally organised by ‘ministérios’ (‘ministries’), with each member of the República responsible for one of the many ‘portfolios’, with the member in charge of ‘Finance’ having most managerial close to 30 Repúblicas in Coimbra have come to be recognised as prominent figures in student movements and their democratic tradition is the ideal framework through which new values can be discussed, infused with the marked creativity of devoted students. The Repúblicas are unique bodies that attract the curiosity of those who visit the city.
