When fractures of the lower extremity of the humerusinvolve the elbow-joint, a certain amount of impairment Fig. Dressing for fracture of condyles of humerus in acute flexion. of joint-motion is apt to occur either from anchylosis orfrom displacement of the fragments, giving rise to gunstockdeformity and loss of the carrying angle, which in manycases it is impossible to reduce completely, so that flexionand extension of the joint are restricted. Bearing thesefacts in mind, it is well to make passive motion in thesecases as early as the second or third week. It is well to ex-plain to the patient or his friends that impairment of joint-motion may result in these fractures in spite of the great-est skill and care in the treatment. In a case of fracturein the region of the condyles of the humerus the dressingsshould be removed in twenty-four hours, and should beredressed in the same manner, and if the swelling doesnot increase and the dressing is comfortable to the patientit should afterward be dressed at less frequent intervals : FRACTURES OF THE OLECRANON. 379 the union is generally quite firm at
