By ether, with Clovers regulating inhaler.—Thisingenious apparatus is shown in Fig. 48. It consists essentiallyof (a) a face-piece carrying a whistle-shaped metal tube fitting into(b) a spherical metal ether reservoir, and (c) a bag When theresorvoir is rotated on the whistle-shaped tube attached to theface-piece, more and more of the current which passes between. Pig-. 48.—Clovers Portable Regitlating Ether Inhaler. ETHER. 275 the patient and the bag is made, by an ingenious arrangement ofslots, to travel over the ether in the reservoii-. An indicator point-ing to 0, 1, 2, 3,;; and F (full) on the circumferenceof the reservoir shows the extent to which the air current is thusdeflected. It must be remembered that fresh air can only beadmitted by removing the whole inhaler, or its bag, from time totime. To use the apparatus : (1) Pour out any ether which mayhave remained from a previous administration. (2) In cold weatherpartially immerse the reservoir in lukewarm water for a minute.(3) Pour in 1| oz. of pure ether. (4) Accurately adapt the face-piece to the face. (5) Fit on the bag. By pressing the face-piecerather more during expirationthan inspiration the bag willbecome distended with expiredair. (6) Keep the indicator at 0 for half a minute. (7) Verygradually rotate the ether resei-voir, so that the 0 moves con-tinuou
