Surgeons Instruments and Appliances. 191 Apparatus for Sterilizing Instruments— Various methods have been tried to disinfect instruments by meansof hot air ovens, steam sterilizers, or strong antiseptic solutions, butnone of them have proved satisfactory. Instruments exposed to rsteam most invariably rust, causing- muchannoyance and no little expense for subsequent repairs. Hot aircurrents are injurious to the temper of steel and dull the edges ofcutting instruments, while the method of simply immersing instrumentsin an antiseptic solution should not be countenanced, as it is not at allreliable. Bacteriological experiments have proved beyond question thatmicro-organisms of ordinary pus and green pus are destroyed by boilingwater within a few seconds, and germs of anthrax within a few immersing instruments in boiling water from one to three minutes athorough sterilization is accomplished. One per cent, of soda should always be added to the water, as
