Althcjugh by the conhguration of tiie land Plvm- 6 outh Harbor seems to have been designed for aperfect haven against every wind that blows, unfortu-nately it is dependent upon a full sea for depthenough of water to float vessels of much draught atthe wharves. In 1876 the United States Governmentdug a channel from the wharves to Broad Channel,where there is always a good depth of water, so thatnow vessels drawing six feet can come to the wharves
