Palm Gardens of Elche / Elx, Alicante Province, Valencia Community, Spain

The Palmeral of Elche is a unique cultural landscape. It is the core area of an irrigation system established by the Islamic founders of the city of Elche more than a thousand years ago. Their aim was to maximise the profitability of the use of scarce water through the planting and management of date palms to create irrigated plots that used the palms as living screens to reduce exposure to the sun and wind and to reduce evaporation.
