At the very commencement of the war measures of 1776, the provincialcongress of New Jersey deposed him and were compelledto cause his arrest; he defied them, and refused torecognize any authority of the provincial or the conti-nental congress over him ; he was held a prisoner for ashort time and then permitted to sail for England, wherehe lived until November 17th, 1813, when he died m theeighty-third year of his age.
