Swedish conscript soldiers during maneuvers 1988. K3 Ranger Battalion, Karlsborg, Sweden.

National service was up until recently mandatory in Sweden. During the cold war tensions with the Soviet Union were at times high. Conscripts had the opportunity to volunteer for certain elite units, such as the K3 Ranger battalion depicted here. The Rangers were trained specifically for combat behind enemy lines and had to be self sufficient for long periods.
