Sir Michael Atiyah (), British mathematician. Atiyah was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He moved to Oxford in 1961, first at 's College, then New College. In 1969 he was appointed Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. On his return to the UK in 1973, he took an appointment of Professorial Fellow at 's. In 1990, he was appointed Master of Trinity, Cambridge, and was elected to the Presidency of the Royal Society. Winner of the 1966 Fields Medal, Atiyah is also the author of the seminal work, \Geometry and Physics of Knots\" (1990). Photographed outside the Royal Society in 1993."
