Archibald Maclaine Hooper, lawyer and journalist, aripe scholar and one of the most graceful and accomplishedwriters of his day, was born in Wilmington, North Caro-lina, December 7, 1775, married, June 8, 1806, CharlotteDeBerniere, daughter of Lieut. Col. John A. DeBerniere,*of the 60th Regiment of the British Army, and died , 1853, aged 78 years. Of his children may be mentioned * John A. DeBerniere, emigrated to America in 1799, grandson and name-sake of the Huguenot refugee, Jean Antoine DeBerniere, who fled from Franceabout the time of the Revocation, and settled in William Hooper, D. D., LL. D., for maiij- j-ears Professor of the University ofNorth Carolina and other institutions of learninK; President Walie Forest Col-lege. N. C, 1816 to 184ft; an instructor of j-outh for sixty five years.
