Ruins of Cartoixa of Scala Dei founded in the 12th century this was the first Carthusian house in the peninsula. The monks favored the culture of the vine. Priorat is one of Spain wine DO zone in Catalonia, inland from Tarragona. Poor, stony soils. Mechanization is almost impossible.
