This work was done by Marcel Deprez, and consisted in the trans-mission of powerfrom Miesbachto Munich, —thirty-sevenmiles, a distancelonger than isspanned by anycommercialplant in opera-tion to-day. Theline was of com-mon telegraphwire, and the en-e r g y deliveredwas less than halfa horse power, which was em-ployed in driv-ing a centrifugalpump. The vol-tage of the dy-namo was about1350, and bothgenerator andmotor werespecially-woundGramme ma-chines. The sta-t i o n at Mies-bach, the firstpower-transmission plant in the world, is shown above in Fig. 2. From 1884 the development of the motor, following up the growthof electric lighting, was increasingly rapid, and by the autumn of 1886. FIG. 2. THE MIESBACH POWER STATION. IN THE USE OF ELECTRIC POWER. 633 it was estimated that there were no less than five thousand electricmotors in use in the United States. At the same period there were nine electric railways in operation, running fifty-eight motor cars and aggregating thirty-five and one-halfmiles of track. Many battery motors are included in this estimate, and the arc circuit was still an important source of power. Thereafter the growth of the art was mainly in the direction ofrailway service, though the incandescent lighting stations soon beganto take on motor service in considerable amounts. In 1888 came the Tesla motor that has since played so importanta part in the development of electric power, particularly in the pastfew years. As electric railways became more and more common, andengineers became more familiar with the construction and managementof dynamos for fairly high voltages, motor work began to assumelarger proportio
