Diabetes clinic, ultrasound foot scan. Doppler ultrasound scan being carried out to check the blood supply of the foot of a patient with diabetes. Damage to nerves and blood vessels is one of the side effects of diabetes. Doppler ultrasound scans detect blood flow. A reduced blood supply leads to an increased risk of foot ulcers. A sphygmomanometer (inflatable leg cuff) is used to measure blood pressure. Diabetes mellitus affects glucose sugar metabolism. Blood sugar is not oxidised due to a lack of the pancreatic hormone insulin. Treatment is based on a strict diet and insulin injections to maintain the blood-sugar balance.
