HISTORY The Long Island Raliroad Company—one of the first steam railroads of theUnited States—was incorporated in April , to build a line from the villageof Greenport, L. I. to the water edge in the village of Brooklyn, to connect withsteamboats at Greenport to make a through line from New York to Boston. Thefirst line built was from Brooklyn to Jamaica in 1834; Long Island City toJamaica in I860: Long Island City and New York and Flushing Junction 1854;Whitcstone and Whitestone Junction 1868; Rockaway Junction and Far Rock-away 1873; Great Neck and Port Washington 1898. ELECTRIFICATION Electrical work on the lines of the Long Island Railroad commenced in 1904and electric service was started from Brooklyn to Rockaway Park across theJamaica Bay trestle, July 28, 1905; from Brooklyn to Jamaica, August 30, 1905;to Belmont Park.
