By placingthese most useful and convenient appendages in this position,we not only make them at once easily accessible from thekitchen or the dining-room, but we also remove the kitchen,with its concomitant noises and odors, to some distance fromthe main hall, and these may be still further lessened in effect,by having a door at both ends of this passage, to be shut whenrequired. The kitchen itself is 16 feet square; it is amply lighted andventilated, and communicates directly with the open air, by thepassage at the further side. In this passage is a servants stair-case, communicating with the apartments in the chamber story. The chamber story contains abundant accommodation for a. TFig. 57.] cottage. There are three handsome bedrooms, and two of a COTTAGE RESIDENCES. 135 smaller size. That over the drawing-room being the largest,and the most beautiful in form, may be kept as the state bed-room, being fitted up with all the appliances of comfort in itsfurniture and fixtures. The little room over the porch willmake a delightful room for a bachelor, or if one of the youngladies takes a fancy to it, it will make a little bijou of a boudoir,the oriel window giving a character of novelty and beauty tothe whole apartment. On the second floor of the kitchen wingare a bath-room, near the main hall (which may be suppliedwith hot water by pipes leading to a boiler in the kitchenbelow), and three servants bedrooms.
