Next to iron the most important metal of Missouri is lead. Lead min-ing lias been carried on here for more than one hundred years, and thefirst discoveries of lead were made as early as 1720. Up to the j^resenttime new discoveries have been frequent, and it is now conceded that MISSOUEI. 41 there is probably no country on the globe so rich in lead deposits as Mis-souri. The mineral occurs in lodes, veins and disseminations, which areyet only partially determined; but enough knowledge of the extent, depthand thickness of deposits has been acquired to show that their range andrichness exceed any other known lead-bearing region in the world.
